 West Virginia, sometimes considered part of the South, sometimes part of the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, is known for its coal mining activities and its stretch of the Appalachians. Originally a part of Virginia, it broke away and joined the Union during the Civil War. Its capital and largest city is Charleston.
